Changing the Default Save Location permanently

If you prefer keeping your desktop pristine but still want physical files saved, you can route them to a dedicated folder. First, create a folder in your Documents called “Screenshots”. Then, type this into Terminal (but don’t hit enter yet):

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location

Make sure there is a space after the word “location”. Now, drag that new “Screenshots” folder from Finder directly into the Terminal window. Terminal will automatically write the exact file path for you. Hit Enter. Then run the `killall SystemUIServer` command.

Markup: The Hidden Powerhouse

Taking the picture is only half the battle. Usually, you need to point something out. You need to draw a red box around a typo, pixelate some sensitive financial data, or slap a giant arrow pointing to a missing button.

When you take a screenshot on a Mac, a floating thumbnail appears in the bottom right corner of your screen for a few seconds. Do not ignore it.

Click that thumbnail before it slides off-screen.

This opens the Quick Look Markup interface. It is a surprisingly fully-featured annotation suite built right into the OS. You don’t need to open Photoshop or even Apple’s own Preview app. Right here, in this temporary window, you can access a variety of tools.
